A confined space is an enclosed or partially enclosed area that is big enough for a seafarer to enter. It is not designed for someone to work in regularly, but seafarers may need to enter the confined space for tasks such as inspection, cleaning, maintenance, and repair. Enclosed space entry remains one of the most hazardous areas of shipboard operations. Unless proper training, equipment, and procedures are in place, seafarers must not be allowed to enter such spaces.
