2355 - Introduction to SOLAS

A clear, engaging introduction to the SOLAS Convention (Safety of Life at Sea) for seafarers and shore staff. Learners trace SOLAS from its post-Titanic origins to today’s chapter structure, see how it integrates with MARPOL/STCW, and connect the rules to real shipboard practice—construction and stability, fire safety, lifesaving appliances, GMDSS, navigation, cargoes (including dangerous goods), ISM/ISPS, bulk carrier specifics, VoC audits, and Polar Code measures. The course blends brief videos, visuals, and drill-based scenarios to turn regulatory text into practical, decision-ready know-how.

Course Content

After completing this training, the learner will be familiar with the following topics:
Summarize the purpose and evolution of SOLAS and explain why “tacit acceptance” accelerates amendments.
Determine SOLAS applicability for a given vessel and voyage, stating key exemptions and the roles of flag and port State control.
Describe, in plain language, what each major SOLAS chapter requires (I, II-1, II-2, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI-1, XI-2, XII, XIII, XIV) and match those requirements to common shipboard tasks.
Identify critical shipboard controls that prevent high-impact events: subdivision and damage stability, fire prevention/detection/suppression, lifesaving appliance readiness, safe navigation practices, and safe carriage/segregation of dangerous goods.
Explain the intent of ISM and ISPS within SOLAS and outline how drills, maintenance, and access control build safety and security culture.
Recognize chapter-specific measures for high-speed craft, bulk carriers, and polar operations, and list extra preparations required before entering polar waters.
Interpret routine compliance evidence (surveys, certificates, checklists) and prepare for inspections/audits that verify SOLAS implementation.
