2356 - Introduction to MARPOL

This course provides an overview of MARPOL (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships), the IMO's cornerstone regulation for marine environmental protection. Participants will explore all six mandatory Annexes governing oil, noxious liquid substances, packaged harmful goods, sewage, garbage, and air pollution, and learn how non-compliance leads to heavy repercussions like fines and detentions. The course emphasizes proactive compliance, required equipment, accurate record-keeping (e.g., Oil Record Book), and addresses future MARPOL changes concerning GHG, underwater noise, and microplastics.

Course Content

After completing this training, the learner will be familiar with the following topics:
Identify the historical foundation of MARPOL and recognize the severe penalties associated with non-compliance.
State the specific requirements of MARPOL Annex I (Oil) and Annex V (Garbage), including equipment (OWS, ODMCS) and mandatory records (ORB, Garbage Record Book).
Differentiate between the classifications of harmful substances in liquid bulk (Annex II) and packaged form (Annex III).
Explain the compliance methods for managing sewage under Annex IV (treatment, holding tanks).
Describe the key measures of MARPOL Annex VI (Air Pollution), specifically the global and ECA sulfur limits, NOx controls, and the use of energy efficiency tools (EEDI, EEXI, CII).
Apply the 5-step compliance checklist to daily operations, focusing on the need for updated certificates (IOPP, IAPP), regular training, and diligent record-keeping.
Recognize the upcoming regulatory focus of MARPOL, including proposed annexes for GHG emissions, underwater noise, and microplastics.
