REMO023 - Piracy & Armed Robbery at Sea

This course provides comprehensive, practical training designed to prepare seafarers for the threats of piracy and armed robbery at sea. Moving away from a purely compliance-based approach, it focuses on real-world application, scenario-based exercises, and proactive risk mitigation. The program equips crew members with the necessary tools to identify early warning signs, harden the vessel, maintain structured communication, and execute critical survival and recovery procedures before, during, and after an incident.

Course Content

After completing this training, the learner will be familiar with the following topics:
• Differentiate legally and operationally between piracy on the high seas and armed robbery within territorial waters.
• Identify behavioral cues of suspicious vessels and local traffic anomalies early enough to maximize onboard defensive options.
• Conduct a structured vessel scan to locate and address vulnerabilities at key access points, decks, and the stern.
• Apply a layered defense framework using lookouts, vessel maneuvering, razor wire, and access control to deter and delay attackers.
• Execute an immediate, parallel response during an active attack (raising alarms, escalating to command, and accelerating to maximum safe speed).
• Manage a secure retreat to the ship’s citadel while maintaining communication and accounting for all personnel.
• Demonstrate proper psychological and behavioral survival principles if captured or confronted directly by attackers.
• Prioritize post-attack actions systematically, focusing first on crew accounting and medical aid, followed by information preservation and reporting.
