Course Content
TAfter completing this training, the learner will be familiar with the following topics:

Gain a foundational understanding of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and its critical role in maritime safety.

Recognize the key regulations outlined in the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Radio Regulations that govern maritime radio communications, including GMDSS.

Learn about the standardized system for identifying radio stations used within GMDSS to ensure clear and efficient communication.

Understand the importance of service publications, such as maritime radio coast station lists and international radio call signs, for effective GMDSS operation.

Explore the various components that make up the GMDSS, including satellite and terrestrial radio systems, each serving specific communication and distress alerting functions.

Master the different communication systems employed within GMDSS, such as Digital Selective Calling (DSC) and Maritime Safety Information (MSI), for various communication needs.

Grasp the role of GMDSS in Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, including distress alerting, communication with rescue coordination centers, and coordinating search efforts.

Understand the certification requirements for GMDSS radio operators onboard vessels, ensuring qualified personnel can operate the system effectively.

Recognize the importance of record keeping for GMDSS operations, maintaining a log of all relevant communication activities.

Learn about GMDSS equipment surveys, which ensure the proper functioning and compliance of the system onboard vessels.
