1138 - Understanding Meteorology

This training module provides a comprehensive overview of weather phenomena crucial for safe marine travel, emphasizing the importance of understanding wind, waves, and storms. It delves into the formation and types of wind, discusses the influence of pressure systems and the Coriolis effect, and explains the workings of the Beaufort Wind Scale. The presentation further explores air masses, fronts, depressions, thunderstorms, and tropical revolving storms, providing insights into their formation, characteristics, and associated hazards. It emphasizes the importance of weather bulletins, forecasts, and shipboard observations, while also outlining procedures for navigating safely in rough seas, fog, and ice. The e-learning course concludes with a discussion of weather routing services and Heavy Weather Damage Avoidance Systems, showcasing advanced technology and practices for enhancing maritime safety.

Course Content

After completing this training, the learner will be familiar with the following topics:
Understand the fundamental principles of wind formation and patterns, including pressure systems, the Coriolis effect, and the formation of planetary and local winds.
Identify and describe various types of wind, including trade winds, polar easterlies, westerlies, sea breezes, land breezes, monsoons, and Meltemia.
Explain the importance of atmospheric pressure and isobars in understanding weather patterns and forecasting.
Interpret weather bulletins and forecasts, including terminology used to describe wind speed, visibility, pressure changes, and sea state.
Conduct basic meteorological observations on board ships, using instruments like the barometer, anemometer, thermometer, and hygrometer, and making visual observations.
Explain the concept of true wind and apparent wind, and understand how they differ.
Differentiate between air masses, fronts, depressions, thunderstorms, and tropical revolving storms, understanding their formation, characteristics, and potential hazards.
Identify the warning signs of an approaching tropical revolving storm (TRS) and the steps involved in taking avoiding action.
Explain the concept of dangerous and navigable semicircles in a TRS, and the strategies for navigating safely within each.
Apply the principles of safe navigation in rough seas, fog, and ice, including reducing speed, altering course, securing the ship, and taking necessary precautions.
Understand the role of weather routing services in optimizing routes and enhancing safety during voyages.
Describe the functions of Heavy Weather Damage Avoidance Systems and how they can contribute to minimizing hull damage and ensuring safe navigation.
